Help the right people find the service you offer.
Clear services, accurate business information and a useful next step. Start with the basics of local search.
There is a difference between somebody seeing your post and somebody looking for you. The first is interruption — they were there for something else and you appeared. The second is intent. They have a problem right now and they are typing it in. The second kind of person is worth many of the first, and they behave completely differently once they arrive.
What being findable means in practice
Four things, in rough order of how much they matter for a local service business.
Your Google Business Profile. If your business is eligible, keep its information complete and accurate, including the category, hours and contact details. Google recommends complete business information and explains that local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Read Google's local ranking guidance.
Useful service information. Give distinct services their own pages when there is enough useful information to justify them. Explain genuine service coverage rather than making near-identical pages for every city. The goal is to answer a person's question, not to manufacture page count.
Honest reviews. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. See Google's explanation. Make it easy for customers to share their real experience, without promising a reward for a favourable review.
The boring technical floor. Fast on a phone, works on a phone, one clear tappable number, forms that arrive, a URL structure that does not change every time you edit a page. None of it is glamorous and all of it is disqualifying if it is broken.
Why it beats the alternatives on cost
Your website gives you a place to explain your offer and receive enquiries directly. It still needs hosting, maintenance and content, and search results remain controlled by search engines. Compare your actual costs and enquiries across search, referrals, directories and advertising rather than assuming one channel always wins.
How long it takes
Separate completion from results. A broken phone link can be fixed quickly; ranking changes and customer enquiries are not guaranteed on a schedule. Google explicitly says you cannot request or pay for a better local ranking. Read the official guidance. Track useful actions over time and keep information current.
